For the first time since I went back to work, I’m glad my shift is over. I’ve been in a complete tizzy for the entire afternoon, putting cosmetics onto the wrong shelves and stumbling into mannequins, until Tamara told me to go home and get some rest.

Linkin Park’s Numb blares through the speakers when I shove my headphones over my ears and head out onto the sidewalk. But as soon as Chester Bennington starts to whine about how faithless he feels and how lost he is, I hit pause on my iPod and yank my headphones down.

Sighing, I swerve my gaze over the shopping mall, hoping to glimpse that sleek F8 Tributo once more, but no Ferrari is in sight.

He left. Ran away. Again.

My heart shrinks inside my chest as I make my way home. There’s just something about his face—the rugged beauty hidden underneath his hood, the guarded smiles, the gentle eyes—that flicked a switch in my head. As if his mere presence had turned on random lights in the dark chaos that is my mind at the moment, illuminating a room with countless doors. I’m running to each of them, rattling the handles, but they remain locked, and I don’t know where to find the fucking key.

Who the hell is the guy? Something is familiar about him, but in a strangely distant way. As if I’d known him for a long time but had never been close to him. Maybe he’s a regular at the store, and Tamara told him about my condition.

But he hasn’t said one word about the accident. No ‘I’m sorry about what happened to you,’ or ‘how are you coping?’

No, instead he gave me a smoldering look and a kiss on my head that felt as if he set my heart on fire.

And that body… Bulging chest, incredibly defined arms, and abs that looked as if they could withstand the drill of a jackhammer. The sight of his rippled torso triggered another tremor in my hands that rattled through my entire skeleton. I’ve never seen such perfection up close. Or have I? Shit, no. I refuse to believe that any head injury could be severe enough to kill such a memory.

I lock the vivid picture of him away for the moment and channel all my focus when I near a traffic light. My hands clench into fists as I wait for the red to switch to green. A bunch of students are fooling around in front of me, punching each other’s arms.

“Hey, take a step back, will ya?” I snap at the two standing too close to the edge.

They frown at me over their shoulders, one starting to cackle, the other leisurely munching on his chewing gum and cocking an eyebrow in that God-you’re-so-uncool kind of way. Of course, none of them heed my warning. I scowl back at them when a truck comes from the left, faster than the speed limit allows. My teeth clench as it rumbles past, a gust of fuel-thick air whipping through my hair.
